Morus participated in the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s mission to Singapore

Morus Inc. (Headquarters: Tokyo; Representative Director and CEO: Ryo Sato; hereinafter referred to as “Morus”) is pleased to announce that our CEO Sato was invited to the startup mission held by the Government of Japan with Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Saito on June 6th.

■ About the Startup Mission

We attended the Japan-Singapore Co-Creation Platform (JSCCP) kick-off seminar, exchanged opinions with Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Saito, and conducted a pitch for local investors at “BLOCK71 Singapore” run by NUS Enterprise, the business support division of the National University of Singapore (NUS). We explored potential collaborations with local investors and companies. We will accelerate the expansion of sales in Singapore.

■ About the Japan-Singapore Co-Creation Platform (JSCCP)

The JSCCP is a new collaboration framework to promote open innovation among Japanese and Singaporean companies, universities, research institutes, etc. agreed upon at the 2nd Japan-Singapore Economic Dialogue. It helps the two countries share their advanced knowledge and accelerate joint development projects. It also supports the promotion of corporate collaboration and the commercialization and international expansion of research seeds held by universities and research institutes.

The kick-off seminar was attended by Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Saito and Second Minister of Trade and Industry and Minister of Human Resources Development Tan See Leng, and was attended by approximately 200 people from Japanese and Singaporean companies, investment institutions, government agencies, etc.

In the second half of the session, nine Japanese startups who accompanied the seminar gave pitches, and networked with local investors and business companies who participated.

■ BLOCK71 Pitch Event in Singapore

With the full support of NUS Enterprise, we held a pitch event for local venture capital investors and business companies that do business locally at BLOCK71 Singapore, a global incubation initiative run by NUS Enterprise.

After the pitch event, a networking session was held to deepen the interaction between participants, and many positive exchanges of opinions were held for local collaboration and cooperation.

■ About the Startup Mission Accompanying the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry

The Japanese government has formulated a “Five-Year Plan for Startup Development” in 2022 and is mobilizing policies to achieve the goal of “increasing startup investment to 10 trillion yen by fiscal 2027.” In order to create startups that can win on a global scale and achieve this goal, it is important to build advanced startup ecosystems and networks overseas.

For this reason, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry organizes startup missions to coincide with the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry’s overseas visits and supporting the overseas expansion of Japanese startups.

■ About Morus

Morus is a university-oriented startup company with a focus on food and nutrition science of silkworms. We research and produce biomaterials made from silkworms, the insects that have supported development of the Japanese economy. Our mission is to solve global problems such as the protein crisis by creating new food ingredients and raw materials from silkworms and supplying them to multiple industries through efficient mass production.

Silkworms are naturally rich in protein, have abundant nutrients, and are full of potential. There have been great advances in the research of silkworms’ unique nutrients that are not found in other insects. Silkworms are suitable for mass production because of their nature of not escaping and not cannibalizing, which has been developed over the long history of domestication. Ongoing research on silkworms continues to yield new discoveries. We believe silkworms will solve the global food crisis and health problems, and even help promote other industries using Japanese technologies and new research findings.
