Morus has begun trial silkworm cultivation in Okinawa Prefecture as a first step toward building a system for mass production in Japan. The trial aims to assess cultivation conditions for silkworms in Okinawa’s climate and to lay the groundwork for a supply chain.
On October 1, 2026, Morus established its first research base, the Morus Okinawa Bio Research Laboratory (tentative name), at the Okinawa Health Biotechnology Research & Development Center (OHBIC) in Uruma City, Okinawa Prefecture. The trial cultivation is the laboratory’s first project and is being carried out in collaboration with local companies and analytical institutions. The laboratory will evaluate the silkworms raised in the trial and the mulberry leaves they feed on. The results will inform research on functionality and on manufacturing and processing, and will shape future cultivation plans and the development of a production system.
Going forward, Morus plans to advance its research in stages across three areas: cultivation, manufacturing and processing, and functionality. While hiring researchers, the company will also expand its partnerships with businesses and research institutions in Okinawa.
